Though less celebrated than the justifiably legendary volumes of THE DUKE ELLINGTON SONGBOOK from the mid-'50s, 1966's ELLA AT DUKE'S PLACE is nonetheless a sterling achievement. This CD reissue, featuring remastered sound, new liner notes, and never-before-seen photos, brings out the subtleties not only of Fitzgerald's honeyed voice (which by this point inher long career was growing burnished and dusky, somehow bluesier than before) but also of Jimmy Jones' brilliant arrangements. The interplay of such Ellington stalwarts as JohnnyHodges, Paul Gonsalves, Cat Anderson, Cootie Williams, and Ellington himself on piano is reason enough to listen to this set on its own; by the mid-'60s, these men had played together in varying combinations for more than three decades, and the casual complexity of these arrangements is as impressive as Fitzgerald's spectacular singing.

From the evidence of surviving band members and from a look at both Ella Fitzgerald's and Duke Ellington's itineraries at this time, certainly a great deal of effort was expended by all to make this 1965 date (a rematch of the principals' legendary 1957 songbook sessions) special in all regards.

The charts are superbly played and astonishingly well sung by Fitzgerald, who at times reaches a level of emotionality rarely associated with her. The continuity of style in everyone's playing, in fact, on all of the charts makes the session a masterpiece. And one lovely reunion.
--- Keith Shadwick (excepted from liner notes)
