This CD contains roughly one-third of the output of the Basie orchestra during the formative three-year period - 1936 to 39 - in which they recorded for the Decca label. The claim that this is their "best" is entirely based on my arbitrary decisions. But considering the remarkable talents at work here (as identified in Loren Schoenberg's properly enthusiastic overview which follows), it would be difficult to make many wrong guesses. Basically, what I did was to [a] eliminate several selections recorded by Basie-and-rhythm only (some of them are wonderful, but I had elected to make this strictly a band CD), [b] omit numbers with vocals not by Jimmy Rushing, and [c] avoid the various secondary pop tunes that music publishers always seemed to force-feed to young bands in the '30s and '40s. (Actually, the only tunes here not written by Basie and/or band members are the two superior standards, Honeysuckle Rose and Oh, Lady Be Good, that happen to have been, respectively, the first and last items the band made for Decca.)
After that, I was down to a repertoire that called for only a small handful of personal-choice deletions to reach the required size. But what I had above all was a pared-down, lean-machine collection that contains an incredible concentration of power and swing - and a lot of wonderful Lester Young. That's certainly as good a definition of best-of-Basie as anyone could ask for.
