Late in September 1997 it was once again time for Jazz at the BP Studienhaus and as usual top bands were staged at the mansion on the Elbchaussee. Among them Monty Sunshine's Jazzband, already well-known at the Studienhaus.
Clarinettist Monty Sunshine belongs to the top in European traditional jazz and was one of the founders of the legendary Crane River Jazzband. He had been playing with Ken Colyer and - since 1945 - in the Chris Barber Jazz, which in its original formation was also guest at the BP Studienhaus. In the fifties Monty Sunshine's solos in Petite Fleur and Wild Cat Blues contributed to the worldwide reputation of the band. In 1961 Sunshine left Barber to set up a band of his own, which was successful through the years. Not only musical mastery was the key for its success, but also the unique way of its leader fronting the public: right from the beginning he is in close contact with the audience throughout the evening.

Live at the BP Studienhaus
The BP Studienhaus at the Elbchaussee 486 in Hamburg-Blankensee is in fact a training centre - there are seminars, courses and workshops almost daily. Once a year, though, the whole house is changed into a jazz centre for three days. Since 1990 all big names in European traditional jazz have played here: Monty Sunshine, Mr. Acker Bilk, Papa Bue, Kenny Ball, Chris Barber (also with the Original Band from 1954, including Lonnie Donegan). Since 1991 these live performances have been recorded for a CD special series which is greatly appreciated, and not only by jazz fans. Because of the private atmosphere in the Studienhaus the live concerts invite a very special response of the public which is captured in this Timeless series.

In 1997 this jazz collection was continued by another CD: Monty Sunshine continues the tradition and once again the special atmosphere of Jazz Live at the BP Studienhaus can be enjoyed in these recordings.

Monty Sunshine

Active Decades: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Apr 08, 1928 in London, England
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Dixieland, Trad Jazz, Jazz Instrument, Trumpet Jazz

Jazz clarinetist/singer Monty Sunshine was born in England in 1928, and although he would go on to become a solo recording artist, first got his start as part of such bands as the Crane River Jazz Band and the Chris Barber Band. Come 1960, Sunshine decided to strike out on his own, forming Monty Sunshine's Jazz Band, which included trumpeter Rod Mason, ex-Barber banjoist/guitarist Dickie Bishop, vocalist Beryl Bryden, pianist Johnny Parker, trombonist Geoff Sowden, bassist Gerry Salisbury (who also doubled on trumpet), and drummer Nick Nicholls. The early '60s saw Monty Sunshine's Jazz Band tour regularly to support such albums as Black Moonlight and Sunshine, as the group kept going (with a few lineup adjustments along the way) right up to the 21st century. In 1994, Sunshine rejoined the Chris Barber Band for the Barber Jubilee Tour, before returning back to his own band. Further solo releases soon followed, including 1998's Live at the BP Studienhaus, plus a pair of albums in 2000, Gotta Travel On and South.
