This DVD presents two concerts recorded live at the Gasteig Philharmonia in Munich, performed in this capital of southern Germany by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Sir Georg Solti, in 1993.
Bruckner's symphony no. 3: Anton Bruckner so greatly admired Richard Wagner that he not only dedicated this third symphony to him but also worked into it musical quotations from Tristan and Isolde, and The Valkyries (though he subsequently deleted the latter). At a period of great conflict in Vienna between adherents of Johannes Brahms' more conservative music and the forward-looking compositions of Richard Wagner, the third symphony's first performance ended in uproar and was dismissed by many. Today the work forms a standard part of the romantic music repertoire.
Symphony in three movements: Composed between 1942 and 1945, Stravinsky's neoclassical Symphony in three movements is the first great work he wrote after emigrating to America. Inspired by feature and documentary films, the work - as the composer himself indicated - reflects the difficult period of the second world war, 'this our arduous time of sharp and shifting events, of despair and hope, of continual torments, of tension, and at last cessation and relief'. There are also echoes here of his (failed) attempts to find acceptance as a composer in Hollywood, after his income as a conductor dried up during the war. |
