Filmed from 29 July to 3 August 2000 at the Auditorio Stelio Molo, RTSI, Lugano
Closely associated with the Diabelli Variations from the beginning of his career, Piotr Anderszewski nevertheless declined to record the work until approached in 2000 by the French film-maker Bruno Monsaingeon, renowned for his films of Glenn Gould, Sviatoslav Richter and Yehudi Menuhin. The resulting film, originally shown on French television, was created using a unique and complex cinematic technique designed to capture both the detail of a studio recording and the spontaneous brilliance of a live performance. Piotr Anderszewski's complete performance of the Variations is preceded by a fascinating interview in which he offers his impassioned analysis of the work.
The CD release of this recording in 2001 won international acclaim and marked the beginning of Piotr Anderszewski's recording career with Virgin Classics. "A performance that is as original as it is riveting." The Telegraph
