Serendipity, of the sort which turns dinosaur footprints into stone for the edification of future generations, put an engineer and equipment together with an experimental band to capture a wild night at the Penthouse. Thus we can be present at the laboratory, watching the glow as critical mass is achieved and the music ignites. We can hear the experimentation, the creation, the transition between approaches. We can go back to that Thursday night in September in a little club in Seattle, and catch the John Coltrane group live.
