This DVD is a live recording of a 1996 New Year's Eve concert conducted by Claudio Abbado, with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Swedish Radio choir, and violinist Maxim Vengerov. The sounds and rhythms of gypsy music figure in the works of Johannes Brahms, who turned his attention to Hungarian melodies early on in his career, integrating them into compositions such as the Hungarian Dances, Gypsy Songs (op. 103) and the Four Songs for Female Choir (op. 17).
Maurice Ravel likewise adopted the great technical range and musical language of Hungarian gypsy virtuosi in his Rhapsody for Violin and Orchestra, also known as Tzigane.
In Hector Berlioz' staged oratorio The Damnation of Faust (op. 24), the tragic love story between Faust and Gretchen culminates in a vibrant Hungarian March, which since its first performance in Paris, in 1846, has been an essential showpiece in every symphony orchestra's repertoire. |
