Rossini is deemed to be the most successful opera composer of his time. His overtures are truly masterpieces, despite the fact that they were created in the majority of cases the night before the work's premiere. As Rossini remarked, "nothing primes inspiration more than necessity". Yet their fascinating rhythm, as well as their dramatic and vivacious melodies, makes the overtures some of the most familiar, often played pieces of classical music.
Here the excellent Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart performs under some of its leading conductors, such as Alberto Zedda, renowned as the foremost Rossini expert, Uri Segal and Wolf-Dieter Hauschild. |
