Officially founded in the early 1960s, the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio was a remarkable collaboration between three of the great post-war American soloists. Their joint career lasted for more than twenty years, until the death of the cellist Leonard Rose in 1984. As a trio, they achieved international success, and left a deep and lasting mark on the repertoire of music composed for piano, violin and cello. In 1974, they agreed to make a recording of the complete Brahms trios for French television. It is this recording that Classic Archive has now resurrected. Via these masterpieces, the three performers demonstrate a superlative command of their instruments and a physical involvement that is truly impressive, given that they are shut up alone in a studio without an audience. The direction and colour film are remarkably effective in analysing minute details of facial expressions and the perfect synthesis of an ensemble at the height of their powers. |
