Zadek's production of the opera, which combines Brecht?s text with Kurt Weill's music, was recorded at the 1998 Salzburg festival. The opera was one of the greatest successes of its day when it originally opened in 1931, and ran for over fifty performances. Its songs, most of all "O moon of Alabama", are still great hits today. In the 1998 Salzburg production they were interpreted by a top-notch ensemble of singers under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies: the title roles were sung by such renowned artists as Catherine Malfitano, Gwyneth Jones and Jerry Hadley.
"The richness of Weill's score, with its allusions to Beethoven's Fidelio, is brought out under Dennis Russell Davies's baton, and there are beautifully sung performances from Jerry Hadley and Catherine Malfitano." The Guardian
"Zadek's Mahagonny is one of those rare opera spectacles where all the elements magically and effortlessly flow together... above all it is due to conductor Dennis Russell Davies who, in spite of his virtuosity and rhythmical precision, endows Weill's songs with an exuberant, party spirit." Der Spiegel
"Catherine Malfitano sang Jenny exquisitely, a true lyric soprano relishing the beauty of Weill?s writing for voice." The Times |
