Symphonie Classique is one of Prokofiev's most successful compositions, which he commented was written in the style of Haydn. The 1st and 4th movements display the classical sonata form and are expanded by two dance movements, a minuet and a gavotte.
Schnittke dedicated this concerto to Yuri Bashmet and suffered a stroke 10 days after completion. He suggested that 'As if in a premonition of things to come, music came to be with a hurried chasing-through-life (in the 2nd movement) and a slower, more mournful your-whole-life-passes-by-you at death's door (in the 3rd movement)'.
Stravinsky's Firebird Suite is presented in its second version from 1919. It contains only 7 numbers from the original and uses a mid-sized orchestra (including percussion, harp and piano).
