Maria Callas died on 16 September 1977 aged 53. She was probably the greatest opera singer of the century - she was certainly the best known. The events of her life were always news, yet at the time of her death she was alone, and confided in virtually no-one. Her frame lay not only in her musical vrilliance and range, but also in the dramatic intensity whick she brought to her roles. She penetrated deep down to the roots of characters like Tosca, Norma, Medea an Violetta in La Traviata. This documentary gives a new insight into the character of Maria Callas. It celebrates her singing an dramatic skills, explores the wohman behind the public persona an the confilct between her personal aims an her ambitions.
