A Christmas Carol was adopted for a dance drama in three acts by Christopher Gable. The plot closely follows Charles Dickens' immortal tale of a miser who saves his soul and begins to love his neighbour as himself in the nick of time on Christmas morning. The story is told by the Northern Ballet Theatre with great ebullience and vivacity, and it is laced with Christmassy music, sung also by the dancers.
"Even such a well-loved book as this presents certain difficulties when told without words in a theatre context. Eventually, though, the most obvious solution was to use text or song for those moments of the story which needed extra clarification or focus. The decision to ask dancers to sing was not taken lightly. Most dancers have trained to express themselves in movement and have a reluctance to use text in any form. But it soon became evident that the dancers of the company were more than equal to the modes music making require in the story." (Christopher Gable)
