These video recordings of the Beethoven and Brahms Violin Concertos capture Itzhak Perlman in concert with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Perlman's long-time friend and colleague Daniel Barenboim. Although Perlman had previously made studio recordings of both concertos for EMI with Carlo Maria Giulini, these 1992 accounts from the Schauspielhaus in Berlin benefit from the spontaneity of live concerts and the close friendship of violinist and conductor. The DVD, filmed from different angles and in close-up, also permits us to see Perlman's phenomenal technique. "Violinists speak in awe of Perlman's supremely poised bowing action. On this DVD [we see] how unusually high his bowing elbow and wrist are held in order to give the stick added weight and support. ...His large, malleable hands are particularly useful when the notes start teeming. Where many players are forced to rapidly change position with the left thumb as the fingers move up and down the instrument, at times you can see Perlman merely rotate his hand around the thumb..." These concerts, previously available on VHS in EMI's video catalogue, are being released on DVD to coincide with the release of the documentary Perlman in Russia and its associated concerto and recital performances.
