Opera (tragedia lirica) in 2 acts Libretto: Felice Romani [Based: Alexandre Soumet: Norma ou l'infaticide] First performance: 26 December 1831, Milan, La Scala
On DVD - A unique Armenian film version of Bellini's operatic masterpiece of love and high drama set in Roman occupied Gaul. Starring leading Armenian singers, including international soprano Hasmik Papian as Norma and Mariinsky star Gegam Grigorian as her lover Pollione Vincenzo Bellini's, Norma, is the tale of a Druid high priestess who breaks her vows of chastity through love for a Roman officer. When he falls in love with a younger priestess, she rouses her people to rise up against the foreign invaders before sacrificing herself (together with her repentant Roman lover) on a blazing pyre. Film director Boris Airapetian has now taken his stage production out of the opera house into the open air and turned it into a full-length opera film. Filmed on location in his native Armenia this film is shot in places where historical events like those described in Bellini's opera actually took place over two thousand years ago; and around the ancient temple of Garni, built by the Romans to celebrate their conquest of Armenia. The principal singers - Hasmik Papian as Norma, Gegam Grigorian as Pollione, her Roman lover, and Varduhi Khachatrian as Adalgisa, Norma's rival for his affections - are all, like Airapetian, Armenian-born.
