Opera (melodramma) in 3 acts Libretto: Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica [Based: Victorien Sardou: La Tosca] First performance: January 14, 1900, Teatro Costanzi, Roma
Recorded: March 2000
Several opera highlights are brought together on this DVD recorded live in March 2000: Puccini's Tosca, one of the best loved operas in the repertoire, in a world-famous staging at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, sung by an international cast of excellent singer-actors, and directed by Riccardo Muti, one of the foremost opera-conductors. La Scala's former Musical Director was conducting a staged version of Tosca for the first time in his long career and, according to the unanimous view of the critics, delivered a colourful, comprehensive and clear reading. Under his baton, the lead roles were filled by high-calibre stars, among them Maria Guleghina, one of the best dramatic sopranos of our time with a lush and wonderfully differentiated voice and a strong performer of verismo roles like Tosca. The line-up also included Salvatore Licitra, who, in the short time since his debut in 1998, has been dubbed a tenor "worthy of the great Italian tradition". The legendary baritone Leo Nucci rounded off the excellent ensemble. His fascinating timbre and intense and plausible acting have continued to bring him to important stages throughout the operatic world for well over thirty years now. Also a highly acclaimed theatrical event, the revival of the successful staging by Luca Ronconi lends itself perfectly to home viewing on DVD. The lavish set was re-designed by Lorenza Cantini, who enriched Ronconi's version with many new nuances and details. |
