Byron Janis was one of the most outstanding American virtuosos. Sadly, his career was marred by frequent interruptions. A child prodigy, he was unusually fortunate in being taken under Vladimir Horowitz's wing for three years at the age of 14, so as to perfect his technique. His debut performances were a sensation with both audiences and critics and he became the first American pianist to tour the USSR, to great acclaim, in 1960. From this early period, Janis' youthful recordings of Chopin and especially Prokofiev and Rachmaninov remain amongst the high points of his discography.
Prokofiev and Rachmaninov are given pride of place on this DVD, first in Prokofiev's 3rd Concerto conducted by Paul Paray filmed in the studio in 1963 in Paris, then, in a 1968 performance at the Maison de la Radio, with Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, a previously-unreleased item in the Janis discography, although the piece often featured in his concert programmes. In both works, the pianist's virtuosity and sensitivity are still as stunning as ever.
The substantial and important bonus pays tribute to Julius Katchen, another American who died prematurely, playing items from the Brahms repertoire he spent his life promoting: two Hungarian Dances, and most importantly the very rare 2nd Sonata, in which Katchen combines supreme technical skill with passion and delicacy.

Recorded:
Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No.3 in C major Op. 26: Paris 1963
