Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3 in E flat major is a piece of Rhenish culture. The work's vitality as well as its symphonic architecture demonstrates just what mastery Schumann had over the large-scale format.
One might equally name Schumann's third symphony the Romantic, since it brings together almost every ingredient that creates the spirit, ideas and feelings of Romanticism.
