Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) is commonly regarded as one of the great symphonists of the nineteenth century. His 4th Symphony was written in 1884/85, and marked the final culmination of Brahms' composing career. Although he lived for a further twelve years, he did not write any more major orchestral works.
Kent Nagano has strong musical memories related to Johannes Brahms: "At some stage - and in my case it was very early on - every musician has to study Brahms and his compositions." He regards all four Brahms symphonies as masterpieces, "but the 4th has a special status because it is so demanding and so multi-layered." |
