Recorded Live in the Berlin Philharmonie, 2006
Including an exclusive 52-minute documentary with Kent Nagano, produced by Bernhard Fleischer
Running time: 47 mins (concert) + 52 mins (documentary)
In his Eroica symphony Ludwig van Beethoven moved definitively away from the 'classical' symphony of the eighteenth century to the 'grand' symphony of the nineteenth. His third symphony is a key work in the repertoire of any symphony orchestra. The pioneering elements of the work are its unusual scale, daring orchestration, and trailblazing harmonies.
Kent Nagano regards Beethoven's third symphony as a "radical step forward in musical and symphonic thinking" with impact going "far beyond Beethoven's role as a composer." It is a work that makes great demands on the interpreter: "The score contains so many surprises and has such depth that you have to devote a lot of time and patience to it."
Kent Nagano regards Beethoven as the standard against which the entire classical repertoire can be measured. |
