Hailed by the press as "the definitive video production" of Tchaikovsky's music, this exceptional concert series, recorded live from the Alte Oper Frankfurt, features the leading Russian conductor Vladimir Fedoseyev and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra.

1. SYMPHONY NO. 5 in E minor op. 64 (1888)
In springtime 1888, the ideas of writing a new symphony arose. On 13 April, Tchaikovsky wrote in a letter: "... I want to spend all summer and autumn at Frolovskoe, and do a great deal of work ... I am giving thought to a new symphony". But only few weeks later, in the middle of May, he feels empty and "the urge to create" had deserted him. But at least, he wrote the 5th symphony within a few weeks at his cottage Frolovskoe. This symphony was first performed under Tchaikovsky's own baton, in St. Petersburg on November 6, 1888.

2. CONCERTO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA NO. 2 in G major op. 44 ( 1879-1880)
There is hardly a concert which aspired so little to a comparison with another work: the comparison with the Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. Like his first one, it is dedicated to Nikolai Rubinstein, who died unexpectedly in March 1881 in Paris during a concert tour. If the work did not become as popular as its sensational predecessor then there are perhaps two reasons. Firstly it is quite long for a piano concerto - lasting about three-quarters of an hour - and secondly the soloist has to share his glory with a violinist and a cellist in the second movement.

3. Overture in F major (1865)
This Concert Overture was the first work of Tchaikovsky performed in Moscow. The young 25-year-old composer first wrote a Concert Overture in C Minor, but his patron and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein did not regard it as mature enough to be performed. A better reception was given to his arrangement of his F Major Overture, which had been composed back in 1865 in St. Petersburg and had been premiered by the local school orchestra under his direction. His first presentation to the general public was quite successful and he established a name for himself with this work.
