The Berliner Solisten and the Brandis-Quartett Berlin are chamber ensembles formed by first desk players from the Berlin Philharmonic under the regime of Herbert von Karajan -- and they are very, very good. Of course, they are good like Karajan's Berlin was good, which is to say they're polished, blended, and warm. In their 1987 recording of the Octet, the Berliner Solisten play with lightness, grace and a considerable sense of humor: although their performance lasts 63 minutes, at no point in its six movements will the listener cease smiling. In their 1979 recording of the Quintet, the Brandis-Quartett play with power, tenderness and a sure sense of the work's ineffable serenity; although the opening theme of their Adagio is especially long drawn-out, the player's pacing and legato phrasing make it seem not a breath to long... these are certainly superb performances that deserve to be heard both by those who are already familiar with the works and by those who aren't. |
