The earliest of the recordings on this disc (Also sprach Zarathustra) dates from 1959. This is the first of Karajan's four recordings of this dramatic orchestral work and it was the celebrated opening of this version which was used for Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was a bold step for Karajan to record this work at this particular time (pre "2001") because in 1959 this work was a comparative rarity both in the concert hall and on disc. Sales were not brilliant at the start, but after the "Space Odyssey" phenomenon, this Karajan recording has achieved real "classic" status.
Critic's Comments:
Karajan's Decca version of Also sprach Zarathustra was a famous early stereo demonstration disc ... with its wide dynamic range and thrilling virtuosity ... the other works were recorded a year later and sound freshly minted, amazingly full and sharply detailed. Till Eulenspiegel is irrepressibly cheeky and full of wit, and Salome's Dance is decadently sensuous. Don Juan brings a similar, richly voluptuous response from the Vienna strings. Again the playing is superb, as beguiling in the love music as it is exhilarating in the chase. Gramophone |
