Born in Kishinev in the former Soviet Union, Leonid Chizhik studied piano, theory of music and composition at the Central School of Music for Gifted Children at Kharkov. From the age of eleven, he became attracted to jazz music and at fourteen, he gave his first public performances. He went to live in Moscow in 1965 in order to continue his studies at the Gnesin State Institute for Musical Education. In a country where ideological prejudice with regard to "capitalist" music was strong, Leonid Chizhik realized, in the early seventies, that he was the first Soviet pioneer of jazz music to get the opportunity to introduce this genre to a wider public in Russia's larger venues. He played both as a solo artist and with his own trio. Since then, he has been viewed by audiences and critics alike as the foremost and the best Russian jazz pianist. He has made numerous recordings which have sold successfully. Access to other (western-European) countries was long denied to him, which meant he was unable to participate in international festivals before 1982. His solo career has taken him to the four corners of the world - to Japan, Brazil, Canada, India, Germany, France, the USA ... Leonid Chizhik has been living in Germany since 1991 where he holds a professorship in jazz at the Franz Liszt conservatoire in Weimar and at the Richard Strauss conservatoire in Munich. In his new compositions, Leonid Chizhik takes his inspiration from different styles, giving priority to classical music and jazz with the aim of illustrating the universal aspect of music. In this vein, he has compiled programmes such as: "Mozart and Jazz", "Mahler and Jazz" and "Tchaikovsky and Jazz".
