| It is good to have all eleven of Haydn's masses collected in one eight-disc set -- the short early masses, as well as the long late masses, plus the Stabat Mater -- performed by the Trinity Choir and the REBEL Baroque Orchestra, with conducting duties shared by J. Owen Burdick and Jane Glover. The musicians are clearly committed to doing their best by the music, and there are many moments of beauty and grandeur. Unfortunately, those moments are few and far between, and overall, the performances are fairly mediocre. That doesn't mean the predominantly Irish forces don't grasp the meaning of the music and the texts: they are doing all they can, and the results are polished and professional, but they miss the masses' depths of feeling and felicities of musical workmanship. If these were the only recordings of these pieces available, they would suffice. But compared with performances by Richard Hickox, John Eliot Gardiner, Simon Preston or Trevor Pinnock, or especially with the classic recordings of the late masses by George Guest and David Willcocks, these performances seem distinctly superficial. |
