Count Basie has led great bands in his career, which dates back more than 20 years as a leader, but his present one - formed only a few years ago - rates with the best of them (which is another way of saying with the best that ever rolled down the pike). Honors have come to Count and his band right down the line - just about every conceivable poll taken anywhere in the world gives the Basie group first place. Since, today, the Basie band and his "voice", Joe Williams, are inseparable, it's fitting that Joe also won these same awards. In some ways, Williams' career as a singer has been meteoric - at least it turned out that way when he joined the Basie band on Christmas Day, 1954. The fact is Joe's work went without too much recognition - save from other discerning musicians - for many years while he was with several name bands. All his career needed, clearly, was to merge forces with some group that would provide that necessary catalytic spark. Joe, who grew up in Chicago, lists Ethel Waters, Joe Turner and the style of Tommy Dorsey's band in the Swing Era as his major influences.

Includes liner notes by Michael Bourne.
