Although Thad Jones was making a name for himself with Count Basie's orchestra in 1956 when he made this Blue Note debut album, it is in the small-group context that his brilliant and original trumpet style really emerges. With fellow Detroiters Billy Mitchell and Barry Harris and ringers Percy Heath and Max Roach, he crafts inventive arrangements on mostly standards and plays brilliantly. Two bonus tracks have been added, including a beautiful duet with Kenny Burrell.
