Not an edgy cutting contest like so many intergenerational all-star pair-offs, these relaxed sessions feature head arrangements by a working band that had time to rehearse during its California stay. Mulligan, playing saxophone tandem with his idol, Ben Webster, called these dream recording dates.
This special two-CD set, including thirteen previously unissued takes and unpublished William Claxton photographs, makes available the complete sessions exactly as they went down. The previous single-CD reissue of six master takes and five alternative takes is still available.
