Dear Ella is the first real tribute to the First Lady of Song, a tribute paid by one of the greatest voices in jazz today; serving this superb voice, a lively intelligence has allowed Dee Dee Bridgewater to carry off a perilous undertaking, for our memory of most of the songs performed here bears the imprint that Ella brought to them. Dee Dee gives us her own interpretations of them, so very quickly the originals are forgotten, and we find ourselves tasting the new versions, and wondering at the treasures of the imagination that the singer and her directors have deployed for our benefit.
Includes liner notes by Dee Dee Bridgewater and Claude Carriere. |
