Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson (b. Nov. 1, 1926, Badin, NC) recorded for Blue Note almost continuously from 1952-1975 during which time he released more than 30 albums. For this special CD Lou selects his favorite Blue Note tracks and in the liner notes talks about the music and the musicians and how it all came to be. Spanning the musical styles of bebop, soul jazz, and some of the earliest examples of what came to be known as jazz-funk, Lou demonstrates that in every case his music offers a directness and soulfulness that is hard to beat. He is joined by a brilliant cast of players most of whom he helped bring to wider attention in the jazz world. A perfect introduction to Lou Donaldson and his music.
Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson selected these 13 tracks as his personal favorites that he recorded for Blue Note between 1952 and 1968. During those 16 years, Donaldson embraced bebop, hard bop, and soul-jazz, thanks in part to the cavalcade of legendary musicians who passed through his band, including Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, George Benson, and Grant Green. The collection boasts such solid Donaldson-penned tracks as "Cookin'," "The Blues Walk," "Funky Mama," and "Alligator Boogaloo," which became a hit in 1967. While collectors will have little use for this set, it's perfect for the curious listener. ---Al Campbell, allmusic |
