This DVD brings to you the majestic Roberta Flack live in concert from Edmonton in Canada. Supported sublimely by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Flack demonstrates the full range of her sophisticated, Nina Simone, inspired sound. Mixing a fine blend of soul, jazz, gospel and even a touch of disco, the legendary singer performs some of her hits, jazz numbers and a few covers sung in her inimitable style, for a delighted live audience.
Born in Ashville, N.C., in 1939 and, inspired by her father, a church organist, began playing piano at a young age. She went on to win a music scholarship to Howard University, after which she briefly taught music before landing a record deal with Atlantic in the late 1960s.
Flack's first two LPs, First Take and Chapter Two, were not too much of an impression in the charts, but then Clint Eastwood chose the Ewan MacColl song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" for his 1972 movie Play Misty For Me. Flack's gripping version of the tune was an instant success, sending the single straight to Number 1 on the pop charts and keeping it there for six weeks. |
