In this film, Jeremy Cohen is joined on stage at San Francisco's historic Herbst Theatre by other members of his ViolinJazz Quartet and other musical guests to mark what would have been Venuti's 100th birthday.
In a world where the deepest musical roots are often taken for granted, Cohen carries on the legacy of jazz violin with a deep knowledge of, and respect for, the past. His tribute to Joe Venuti, captured here on film, is neither sentimental nor contrived. Rather, he combines the past with the present in a way that draws the audience into the story.

This DVD captures a multimedia event which combines live performance with rare film footage and slides of the late Joe Venuti. By inviting the audience into Venuti's living room and performing his music live onstage, this film not only entertains but imparts a deeper understanding and appreciation of Joe Venuti himself.

From the Actor
An extraordinary thing happened to me one night in 1974. I found my way to the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco to sit in the audience for an evening with Joe Venuti and friends. I had no idea when I arrived at the hall how much this single evening of music would impact my life for years to come.
I was an aspiring teen-aged classical violinist when I arrived to check out this jazz violin guy. I had heard a couple of his recordings and was reasonably impressed. Certain I knew what was going on in the violin world, I was poised to listen and criticize.

Wow. What I experienced was transforming and inspiring beyond my wildest dreams! Frankly I was a bit awestruck by how much fun Joe was having on stage. He loved the music and it came through unmistakably in his violin playing. I could feel it! Surely this was one of my earliest lessons in the communicative powers of music. It awakened in me a desire to speak with the instrument in my hands, to transcend technique, and express the emotions brought on by the music.

With this newfound awareness, and being on the brink of college or conservatory, I walked straight up to the stage at the end of the show and asked Mr. Venuti if he would teach me. In my youthful enthusiasm I shouted, "I'll go anywhere you teach if only you'll teach me!" He replied in his gruff but friendly voice, "I don't teach, kid. You study classical?" "Yes," I replied. After a short pause he pointed his bow at me and said, "Don't stop." . . (excerpted from liner notes)
