Popa Chubby is the godfather of New York City Blues - or, as he calls himself, 'The King Of The New York City Blues?.
City blues - sharp, electrifying, and as modern and cosmopolitan as it is steeped in tradition - is the music which Popa Chubby loves and which he brings to an ever-growing circle of fans with his dynamic live performances and many CDs.
He describes the city blues as like the sound of a subway train arriving at Times Square, like the noise of the traffic at a crossroads or the horns of the famous yellow cabs, all of which are music to the ears of Manhattan's many residents.
Popa was seventeen the first time he picked up a guitar - and never put it down again. He played until his fingers bled, practicing until he could play all his idols' riffs. In 1990 Popa Chubby formed his own band.
The man from the Bronx and his companions became the house band at Manny's Car Wash, a tiny club which has since shut down. Popa was performing around 200 club gigs a year at that time.
Popa put out two albums on his own Laughing Bear label in 1991 and 1993. Then, suddenly, he caught the eye of Sony Music, who offered him a contract with the renowned blues label O-Keh, which existed to promote young talent.
When O-Keh and Popa parted company shortly afterwards due to artistic differences, it was Tom Dowd who advised Popa to go to Europe and try his luck there. As luck would have it, in France he found Dixie Frog, a label which understood his unique approach to the blues - and he encountered an enthusiastic and receptive audience on his extensive tours.
Popa Chubby fuses the blues with funk, rap, rock and even country. Is the blues, as invented by African Americans in the Mississippi delta, capable of development, does it have a future? It stands to reason that Popa Chubby thinks so, 'The spirit of the music is developing ...? |
