Keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, & bassist Chris Wood learned to groove as composers and sidemen with the likes of David Byrne, Bob Moses, John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, the Either/Orchestra, Dewey Redman, and Marc Ribot. While critics have tried to compare them to everyone from Jimmy Smith, Sun Ra, and 1970s-era Miles Davis, their music can be slotted into the dance floor pop and street savvy funk of Booker T, Sly and the Family Stone, and James Brown. They groove in an improvisational mode-some call it jazz. John Medeski explains it all for you: "We take the grooves and harmonic concepts that are natural to us and stretch them the way that we can through improvisation. We may be expressing something different than what pop shoots for, but we're trying to bring the aesthetics of jazz down to earth for the younger generations to relate to."

MMW's first album, Notes From The Underground, recorded for the Hap Jones label, was re-released on the Accurate label in 1995 and is still widely available. Most notably missing from the sound is the Hammond organ, which had not yet made its appearance under the fingers of John Medeski. For this outing, the trio is based around the piano-a grand. The funk is there, except in more extended experimental forms. Down Beat's Bob Blumenthal called Notes "one of the brightest first efforts of 1992."

Their first album for Gramavision, It's A Jungle In Here (1993), sent sophisticated slip-sliding melodies to dwell in the depths of funk. Their sound has been called "acid jazz," though achieved without resorting to technological crutches. There are a few guests sitting in, including Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Lounge Lizards) on guitar and the horn section from the Groove Collective. While the sound is a little too clean, as helmed by producer Jim Payne, their music was still miles away from what anyone else was doing at the time. The album earned 4 1/2 stars from Down Beat, while the Chicago Tribune declaimed the band as "one of the most promising ensembles of 90s jazz."

For Friday Afternoon In The Universe (1995), to distance themselves from the production of Jungle, MMW evolved a more open sound for their tight arrangements, bopping melodies, and meticulously collected groove. They let loose in the studio, pulling in their love of funk, hip-hop, reggae, and blues. In a strange way by experimenting and improvising, they found a language that made their music more accessible to the children of the groove. They attacked their career like a rock band, touring in a camper and playing rock clubs and coffeehouses from coast-to-coast. Playing the 1996 H.O.R.D.E. tour didn't hurt them gaining a legion of fans.

And then there was Shack-man (1996), which broke the band wide open. The material was composed and developed mostly on the road during the 200 shows they played the year before they hit their studio, the "Shack," in the jungle of Hawaii. Even though the music was born out of improv, what they created is very tuneful-discrete "little worlds" as John Medeski described the compositions. The sessions were recorded in 1996 at a location so remote there was no electricity-it took four full days just to set up the alternative power sources: solar cells and an ancient generator. The engineer, David Baker, jokingly referred to the production as "Lord Of The Flies with electricity." Without outside intrusions, MMW were able to focus completely on the making of music. What they created at the Shack caused heads to turn, like those at Rolling Stone who called it "an ass-shaking testament to the many moods of the Holy Groove. Boasting a rhythmic precision somewhere between the flawless propulsion of the Meters and the free-flowing pulse of Weather Report... Long may they shack."

The band is currently signed to Blue Note Records. Their latest album is Combustication, which was followed by an EP of remixes by Billy Martin, Guru, Yuka Honda, The Automator, Bill Laswell and DJ Logic. MMW recently backed John Scofield on his Go Go album for Verve (actually gritting up, in a good way, John's tendency toward smooth jazz). They have also released Farmer's Reserve, an improv, noodling affair, a release that Phish phans would phaun over, as an internet-only release. More recently MMW recorded with Iggy Pop for his next album on Virgin, to be released this fall.
