In the last few years of his life, Zoot Sims added burnish and breadth of tone that deepened enjoyment of his art, already one of the most satisfying personal expressions in all of jazz. That element of his maturity is immediately apparent from the outset of this album, as Zoot caresses "I Hear a Rhapsody." In a parallel development, Sims was one of the few to bring humanity to the soprano sax after John Coltrane's revival of the instrument inspired herds of modern jazz saxophonists to seize on the soprano's most metallic attributes. "If You Were Mine" and "The Very Thought of You" are vehicles for adaptation to the soprano of his spacious sound and ideas of ravishing simplicity. Sims is accompanied here by the sterling New York rhythm section of Richard Wyands, Frank Tate, and Akira Tana
Includes liner notes by Norman Granz.
