These were laid down in 1956, while Sims was still in the process of finding the individual character of his sax's voice. And what a voice it is, very human, both in his moody musing on "Ghost of a Chance: and in the variegated diction of "Not So Deep," one of the three fine Sims originals on the disc. He has good company in trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, laying back suavely with pianist John Willians on "Ghost," kicking up trad jazz fun on "Them There Eyes", and occluding harmonies with Sims on the saxophonist's "Dark Cloud." Trumpeter Jerry Lloyd provides the sweetly harmonic horn service on Williams' "The Purple Clow", and by the time they've finished their handsome presentation of Monk's "Bye Ya" you'll wish the sessions hadn't been as brief as they are rare. |
