YASMINA, A BLACK WOMAN (1969) / POEM FOR MALCOLM (1969)
This fine twofer brings together a pair of albums by tenor and soprano saxophonist Archie Shepp

Full Title - Yasmina, A Black Woman & Poem For Malcolm. Enhanced and digitally remastered reissue of classic jazz albums recorded by the Paris based BYG label in 1969. This 2 on 1 set from the Charly label includes notes from Edwin Pouncey of 'The Wire' magazine.

This is a new addition to Charly's well-received series of enhanced and digitally remastered reissues of classic jazz albums recorded by the Paris-based BYG label in 1969 and the early seventies.
By the late 1960's Archie Shepp, following his earlier patronage by the legendary John Coltrane, had established himself as a leading player in the field of avant-garde jazz.

Although an enthusiastic advocate of musical experimentation, his music still retained a strong sense of tradition, his playing style being deeply tinged with a feeling for the blues and soul music
These two classic albums were recorded in Paris for BYG in August of 1969.
Shepp was joined on all the tracks from the two separate recording sessions by Hank Mobley on tenor, drummer Philly Joe Jones and bass player Malachi Favors from The Art Ensemble Of Chicago.

Lester Bowie (trumpet) and Roscoe Mitchell (bass) from the same outfit feature on the lengthy 'Jasmina'.
Other highlights here are Shepp's reading of the ballad standard 'Body And Soul' and his tenor trade-off with Mobley on 'Sonny's Back'.

This two albums-on-one cd offers excellent value for money and their reissue will be welcomed by fans of Shepp and his cutting edge music. Full discographies and new, updated sleeve notes from Edwin Pouncey of 'The Wire' magazine are included.
