"Pat Martino is one of the sharpest guitar slingers on the planet." Jazziz Back in 1972, a young 20-something guitarist named Pat Martino recorded an album in appreciation of his guitar hero, Wes Montgomery. Though the entirety was created as an homage, the well-regarded recording, originally released by Cobblestone as The Visit, featured just one Montgomery tune. Twenty-three years later, Martino, now 61 and renowned as a master of the six-string himself, returns to the source and delivers Remember: A Tribute to Wes, a remarkable new CD that not only features a full set of Montgomery tunes, but also captures the essence of the legendary guitarist's legacy.
The Wes Montgomery connection holds special resonance for Martino, who in 1980 suffered a brain aneurysm that required surgery and resulted in memory loss. His miraculous recovery in being able to play the guitar again came from listening to his own albums. And he also returned to Montgomery, whom he wanted to honor anew with Remember. "It goes far beyond a conceptual project or a marketing hook," he says.
"I'm trying to recapture what a little boy wanted to accomplish," Martino says. "I wanted to participate like Wes, so this album to me is a dream come true - 30 to 40 years later. Few adults get a chance to achieve that. We get caught up in life and can't get back to that place when you were a child and had dreams for yourself. That's what I've done here. I suddenly moved myself back in time as an adult to the mind of a child. That's why I wanted to be as authentic to the music as possible, to the music I was listening to back then. This album gave me a chance to return to what I loved. I had never done that in my career until this album." |
