In early 1998 the Tenore e Cuncordu de Orosei from Sardinia, Italy and the Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger met for the first time in Venice and spontaneously began making music. In September, Ernst Reijseger travelled to Sardinia to deepen this musical bond. Night for night, a week long, the Voches de Sardinna, Ernst Reijseger and the Scottish percussionist Alan "Gunga" Purves assemble in the remote "Cattedrale di S. Pietro" in Galtelli near Orosei. Folksongs, ancient Sardinian vocal tradition, improvisation and dance rhythms, all of which are equally at home in the Netherlands as well as in Scotland or on Sardinia, meld together naturally and perfectly into a common musical treat.

Ernst Reijseger
Born in 1954 in Naarden, The Netherlands.
Starts playing the cello when he is eight years old. In the early seventies he performs with Sean Bergin, Martin van Duynhoven, Derek Bailey, Michael Moore, Alan Purves and Franky Douglas. Long-time member of the Ensembles of Theo Loevendie, Guus Janssen and the Amsterdam Jazz Trio. In 1985 he receives the major Dutch jazz-award, the 'Boy Edgar Prijs' because he is "an important innovator in the field of improvised music." Reijseger plays with Misha Mengelberg's ICP Orchester, the Gerry Hemingway Quintet, the Clusone Trio and the Arcado String Trio. Besides working as a soloist he collaborates with such musicans as Louis Sclavis, Trilok Gurtu, Yo-Yo Ma and Anner Bylsma. In 1995 he receives the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festivals, Den Haag, Holland.

"The cellist Reijseger combines classical presentation and free improvisation as one concept. The sound may indeed be 'classical', but the content is more inclusive. Reijseger [...] demonstrates that 'freedom' does not necessarily include the freedom to shock, hurt or frighten. And it does include a wide swath of swing and beauty. All is one",the International Herald Tribune writes about the solo album Colla Parte by Ernst Reijseger [Winter & Winter, New Edition No 910 012-2]

Tenore e Cuncordu de Orosei: The Cuncordu de Orosei is born in 1978 with Tore Mula: mesuvoche, Patrizio Mura: voche, Martino Corimbi: cronta, and Franco Sannai: bassu. Their only aim is that of preserving the canti as faithfully as possible to the canons of the Orosein canto tradition. With commitment and perseverance, alongside the older choristers, they begin a journey of study and research into the canti from the Orosei tradition thus making a significant contribution to the appreciation and preservation of the entire musical repertoire.
In August 1997, the group changes its name to Tenore e Cuncordu de Orosei, and it adds Piero Pala, voche and mesuvoche to the group, an indication of the continuity and enthusiasm for the goals that the future will never be able to erase.
