Recorded: Jan 7-10, 1995, The Village Vanguard, New York

Bill Frisell - electric guitar
Joe Lovano - tenor saxophone
Paul Motian - drums

On six evenings in June 1995 the Paul Motian Trio - the only band in today's jazz world existing for a real long period (15 years now) - met at the famous New York jazz club The Village Vanguard to present highly intensive and musical performances.
"The (Paul Motian) Trio floats on air and light, then masterfully decimates the calm with textural cannonfire. The steel girding can always be felt beneath the feather bed of this wonderful band." (The Rolling Stone Magazine)
These breathtaking concerts were recorded with 20 BIT digital recording technique. 14 hours of most beautiful music in the trio's very own style were the result. More than 60 minutes of these recordings were chosen now to be released on the Artist Edition of the new label Winter & Winter: Sound Of Love.

Paul Motian
was born in Philadelphia in 1931. In 1949 he went to New York and started working as a professionell drummer.
In the late fifties Motian played with the legendary Bill Evans Trio which undertook a new approach regarding the division of solo and accompanying musicians and hereby emancipated the drummer from the role of a mere timekeeper.
During the Sixties Motian continued to experiment with the musical potential of drumming in groups lead by jazz greats like Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Pettiford and Charles Lloyd.
In the late Sixties Motian started playing with Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden. After a couple of years as a trio, Dewey Redman joined the group. This Quartet became one of the most innovative groups of its time. Dissolved in 1976, however, each of its members experienced their personal breakthrough in the world of jazz.
During the Seventies Motian released his first albums as a leader: "Conception Vessel" and "Tribute". He was supported by musicians like Charlie Haden, Keith Jarrett, Leeroy Jankins and Sam Brown. In the beginning of the Eighties Motian was looking for new ways to express himself within new kinds of settings. Paul remembers: "During that period I wanted guitars". It was Pat Metheny who recommended Bill Frisell. Working together with him and saxophone player Joe Lovano constantly marked the evolution of the Paul Motian Trio which has been documented on nine albums for JMT so far.

Bill Frisell
"The new electric guitar sound of the decade - oozing, cloudy enveloping - belongs to jazz renegade Bill Frisell. Like the best artists in any field, Frisell is not a slave to his tools; he's the creator who gives them new validity ... his guitar sound is unmistakable - billowing, breathlike, multihued, immense at times, almost palpable."
(Minneaposis Star Tribune)
Bill Frisell is recognized as the leading guitar innovator of the 1980s. Besides leading his own band he also is a current member of John Zorn's Naked City. He recorded countless albums as a guest, sideman co-leader.

Joe Lovano
is one of the most sought-after saxophonists in New York. Old enough to have honed his swing and bop with the last of the great Big Bands, Lovano also kept his ears open to the current storms brewed by Ornette, Miles and Coltrane. Besides working with Motian for the past 15 years, he worked with Mel Lewis, Elvin Jones, John Abercombie, Carla Bley, Peter Erskine and Woody Herman, to name a few. In Lovano's present universe, the mainstream and the avant-garde get eloquently tangled.

The trio`s spectre reaches from free thunderstorms on highest energetic level to sound expanses near to silence, full of differencies and urgent musicality.
Sound Of Love shows contemporary jazz in its most modern interpretation and hypnotic intense. The high virtuosity of the three musicians make this live recording another astonishing recording of a trio that is unique in today`s world of jazz.
