Jazz / Neo-Bop; Soul-Jazz
Recorded: Apr 30, 1998
Randy Johnston Electric blues meets bebop. It's an exciting convergence of sounds that has made Randy one of the hottest jazz guitarists both in the U.S. and abroad. He has performed with such jazz notables as Lionel Hampton, Lou Donaldson, Brother Jack McDuff, Lee Konitz, Jackie McLean, and Warne Marsh. "Riding the Curve" marks his fifth release as a leader and his first for J Curve Records. As Bob Blumenthal has stated, "Randy prefers to lean into challenge and create a ride that is one of a kind."
Joey DeFrancesco Hammond B-3 virtuoso Joey DeFrancesco has performed on numerous recordings as both a leader and sideman for more than ten years. While Joey's speed, technical wizardry, and harmonic sophistication are incredible, it is his ability to create unique improvised lines that really sets him apart from the crowd. These talents along with an ability to swing hard assures him of a continued position of prominence in the jazz organ world.
Johnny Griffin Legendary tenor saxophonist, Johnny Griffin, has played with some of the finest jazz groups in history, including those of Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk. He also co-led a terrific two-tenor combo with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. He is widely regarded as one of the hottest tenor saxophonists ever, by virtue of his lightning speed and his ability to get the most out of a tune. While his compositional abilities are less well known they are considerable. A prime example of his work, "You've Never Been There!", is featured on Riding the Curve.
Idris Muhammad Idris is widely regarded as one of the most soulful drummers on the scene. He has backed an impressive list of superstars including: Fats Domino, Sam Cooke, Roberta Flack, Johnny Griffin, Lou Donaldson, and Ahmad Jamal. His sense of time and his ability to provide rhythmically dynamic backgrounds are particularly evident in an organ trio setting.
Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
