Jazz / Post-Bop
Recorded: July 28, 29 and 30, 1977, Village Vanguard, New York City
Art Pepper - clarinet ("More for Les"), alto and tenor sax ("These Foolish Things") George Cables - piano George Mraz - bass Elvin Jones - drums
"Over the Rainbow" is an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo.
This fourth volume in Art Pepper's series of live recordings from the Vanguard documents the versatility of this jazz immortal better than any other single album of his career. Included in the astutely programmed set are an extended alto sax workout on the blues ("No Limit"), a soulful ballad on tenor sax ("These Foolish Things"), the attractively lazy waltz "More for Les" on clarinet, and an unaccompanied reading of "Over the Rainbow," a tune that helped establish the young Pepper in the early Fifties. In addition, the bonus track "Scrapple from the Apple" provides even more for Les. |
