Recorded: Sep 11, 1954-Feb 21, 1956
After a three-year stint with the George Shearing Quintet, vibist/percussionist Cal Tjader--by 1954 quite enamored of the Latin sounds in jazz--returned to his native San Francisco and established himself as one of the city's permanent jazz representatives. Almost in celebration of this "homecoming," Tjader indulged in a number of Fantasy record sessions in September of 1954 (and February 1956), including more than 20 sides (three-minute, 78-RPM singles) with an S.F.-based Latin rhythm section. The selections on this LP, then, are among the first to establish Tjader as the 1950s grand master of Latin jazz, Latin pop, Latin soul. Combined with Mambo with Tjader (OJCCD-271-2), this album provides a complete cross section of the first roots of the Tjader Latin jazz experience.
