The first version of the classic Monk Quartet formula of which tenorist Charlie Rouse was the essential ingredient came into being at the time of Monk's now legendary Town Hall concert in N.Y. in Feb. 1959. Sam Jones and Art Taylor were the rhythm players in the orchestral segment of the event and together with Rouse and Monk performed three Quartet numbers. The collaboration worked so well that they added Thad Jones on cornet and recorded Monk's next Riverside. The tunes played in this recital by the Quartet are familiar Monk fare and it is fascinating to compare the differences in both "Epistrophy" one of Thelonious' earliest compositions and "Evidence" also recorded at the Sankei Hall concert for Columbia.
