Scofield's Gramavision debut remains one of his best albums, a stripped-down affair where he handles bass as well as guitar parts, Steve Jordan kicks on drums and Ray Anderson and David Sanborn make effective guest appearances. The singularity and character of Scofield's writing comes through strongly, taking Sanborn in particular into areas he rarely visits, while the guitar solos maintain the now-patented balance of deep blues and modernism.
