Jazz / Jump Blues; Traditional Pop; Swing; R&B
Few jazz musicians had a wider range of tastes, or a broader based career, than Louis Prima. This first volume chronicling his live work from the 1930s showcases that fact with performances from three different sources. The set kicks off with nine radio transcriptions of Prima working a one-off date with Joe Venuti's Orchestra in 1934, turning in nice readings of "I'm Confessin'," "Sleepy Time Down South," and "After You've Gone" (these songs mark the only time Prima worked with both Venuti and Red Norvo). Next up are the three tunes from Prima's film debut, Swing It, featuring Pee Wee Russell and Louis' New Orleans Gang. Louis Prima & His Jump Band close things out with an eight-song performance taken from a 1939 aircheck. Transfers range from decent to tinny, depending on the original source. All of this is sanctioned by the Prima estate, and comes with a booklet full of informative notes from Will Friedwald. ---Cub Koda, allmusic |
