No amount of hype can exaggerate the impact that Jimmy Smith had on the burgeoning hard bop movement when he recorded his first Blue Note records in 1956. In fact, he defined the soulful sound that the movement increasingly adopted in the later Fifties. While he defined as well the modern organ-guitar-drums combo - giving it faster, bebop lines - he did the same for slightly larger groups, when he recorded with Lou Donaldson, Jackie McLean, and Lee Morgan.
But then Smith, in the Sixties, with his move to Verve, both enlarged his palette and appealed to a bigger market. He continued to articulate that unique, spiky organ sound, only now it knifed through entire orchestras. His work in particular with the great Wes Montgomery is among the most exciting big-band jazz of the era.
The Definitive Series
Blue Note Records and The Verve Music Group have joined together to launch The Definitive Series, which honors the classic artists of jazz with collections that span the archives of both label groups. This is the first time in history that the two labels have worked together on a project of this nature, pooling their archives to create complete documents of these jazz legends' talents. Each of the titles in The Definitive Series represents the true highlights of such wide-ranging artists as Chet Baker, Nat "King" Cole, Stan Getz, and Sarah Vaughan.
Each album in The Definitive Series represents the artist at their best, as they recorded for different labels during the peaks of their careers. The songs were drawn from the diverse catalogs of Blue Note, Capitol, Decca, EmArcy, Impulse!, Mercury, MGM, Pacific Jazz, Roost, Roulette, and Verve, among others.
