"A swinging post-bop workout that features Farrell's Coltranish soprano work … one of Joe Farrell's best recordings." - JAZZITUDE
"The Clark Woodard & Joe Farrell disc weaves its way through raw energy, tackling four well-placed standards within the scope of the release. Five originals adorn the disc with intricacies of composition and, at times, neck-breaking speed. This is not a CD for the faint at heart or the occasional jazz listener. This is a CD that exhibits burning endurance and harmonic complexities." -eJAZZNEWS.com Joe Farrell's final recording features great radio songs and smoking solos! Drummer Clark Woodard began his relationship with saxophonist Joe Farrell in late 1983, when the two played together in the Joe Farrell Quartet. Farrell has played with Chick Corea's original Return to Forever group, contributing to the first two albums by what became one of fusion's seminal groups. He has also worked with Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, Jack DeJohnette and more. Farrell's CTI albums of 1970-1976, which combined his hard bop style with some pop and fusion elements, made him popular among listeners not familiar with his earlier work. Every take here is a first take, with all members sight-reading their parts - true improvisation in its purest form! |
