Recorded: Feb 17-18, 2000

Astute observers of today's modern jazz scene should be quite familiar with Jim Black's conspicuous and starkly unique approach to drumming as this thirty-three year old musician has already amassed an impressive recorded legacy! Arguably, Black is one of a select few who has revolutionized the role of the modern jazz drummer. Not unlike progressive rock/jazz drummer Bill Bruford who conjured up atypical modes of implementing a simple backbeat, Black's heterogeneous melding of traditional syncopated rhythms and unorthodox backbeats with complex polyrhythms sets him apart from many of his peers. And as a young man who burst upon the scene with the mega-talented saxophonist Tim Berne and his energetically innovative band "Bloodcount", many jazz aficionados soon took notice of Black's refreshingly new and inventive approach to modern jazz drumming.

Jim Black's extensive musical involvement with highly regarded modern jazz innovators such as pianist Uri Caine, trumpeter Dave Douglas, saxophonists Chris Speed, Ellery Eskelin and Tim Berne among others too numerous to cite here, provides the logical stepping stone for his first recording as a leader.

Besides his longtime affiliations with some of modern jazz's most recognizable heavyweights, the drummer has graced the recordings of rising stars, such as pianist/composer Satoko Fujii, guitarist Ben Monder, keyboardist Jamie Saft, trumpeter Cuong Vu and others. Basically, Black is a vital component of any particular group sound regardless of musical format or genre. Yet the drummer's uniquely identifiable musical demeanor and indelible stamp shines forward as years of shedding with the creme de la creme has furnished Black with an education that simply cannot be taught in private music institutions! - Although the drummer did receive a formalized music education at Boston, Massachusetts's prestigious Berklee School of Music.

With his first solo recording - AlasNoAxis, Jim Black extends his multifarious musical past with forward thinking strategies and an idiosyncratic approach. Hence, Black's radical concepts generate thought-provoking notions. However, the music presented herein, provides the discerning listener with an enlivening and thoroughly entertaining experience that is marked by stunning interplay, intuitive ensemble work and memorable themes. On this new release, the drummer utilizes the combined expertise of saxophonist Chris Speed, the impossibly agile bassist Skuli Sverrisson and the laudable talents of electric guitarist Hilmar Jensson. In fact, while not performing with saxophonist Ellery Eskelin or being called upon for session work, Black records and tours with Speed and Sverrisson in the band known as Pachora. An outfit revered for their unique melding of Balkan and North African modal concepts into jazz-based themes and rhythms.

Throughout, the drummer exhibits a compositional style that is not only earmarked by his intricate or enigmatic rhythmic inventions but also extracts from the vast musical territories he has explored or perhaps conquered. Therefore, comparisons might be a daunting task. Listen to the drummer alter the tempo in dizzying fashion on the opener, "M m" as he establishes a kaleidoscopic pace atop Sverrisson's pumping bass lines and Speed's steely edged articulations performed on tenor sax. Here and elsewhere, Black and co. intersperse free-jazz type dialogue into a framework that one might encounter during a Sonic Youth recording as the band surges onward with exuberant spirit while utilizing space and depth to their advantage. The drummer affords the band ample breathing room to develop sub-themes or mini plots within the context of these pieces; however, the music remains focused and is accelerated by a circuitous and at times unpredictable flow that is sure to maintain the listener's attention. Understated melodies preside along with a relaxed sense of urgency on "Optical" and "Maybe" whereas, Hilmar Jensson's tantalizing crunch chords, Sverrisson's unrepentant bass lines and Black's imploding rhythms contribute to the surrealistic musical terrain as we soon learn to - expect the unforeseen!

Jim Black's first recording as a leader presents a panoramic view of an artist who conveys a modernistic outlook to compliment his enviable technical chops. While AlasNoAxis presents the mind's eye with enough to contemplate, Jim Black's deconstruction and reassembling of disparate musical art forms indicates an impressionistic outlook characterized by his eclectic vision and - striking - artistic signature. - Glenn Astarita
