Every month, Jim Black reveals one of his favourite recipes on his homepage, for instance his Chocolate Snack Cake or his Cranberry Sauce, the really good one, certified vegan of course, and made from wholesome, fresh, chemical-free ingredients. And he appeals to us to please use organic ingredients whenever possible and to always support the bio farmers. Black has good taste, an already well-known fact on the musical scene. And - this too we knew - he has team spirit. He's one of those who assume responsibility in a game and see to it that every player's qualities are shown to advantage.
In the field of enlightened improvisation, Jim Black is a busy drummer. Since 1994, he has participated in more than forty recordings by musicians such as Tim Berne, Uri Caine, Dave Douglas, Ellery Eskelin and several others, has toured almost non-stop and has brought to life some projects of his own. For the past two years or so, Black has been leading the quartet Alas No Axis, a robust body of sound making its own way along the border between collective and individual, impetuous improvisation and raw noise, sweet harmony and crude back beats, between an open improvisation which wanders beyond the field of jazz and a rhythmic intensity which seems too subtle to belong to rock. Downtown New York Touch? Seattle Factor? Who knows.
Nothing is certain: SPLAY, the second CD by Alas No Axis, the band led by adventurer drummer Jim Black embraces the horizon of present-day improvised music. And the present - as the band clearly demonstrates - is a fleeting thing, made of quick changes of atmosphere, multiple stimuli and digressions, roaring noise, varied sounds and the feedback from guitars, it is made of stress, hustle and bustle, and short moments of peace and meditation.
Nothing is certain. All is transient. And the transitions are only sometimes abrupt. Usually, a wide array of possibilities is contained within a moment: in the sweet rupture of harmony the raging of the storm, in a many-voiced cacophony the concentration on a single line, in the pulsating rhythm both its standstill and its rebirth.
Black allows the various paths of his musical socialisation to converge within his band, made up of saxophone player Chris Speed, with whom Black was already playing in his youth back in Bellevue near Seattle, guitarist Hilmar Jensson and bass player Skuli Sverrisson. This sometimes brings about a rowdy rock sound, with a typical guitar-band feedback, bouncing off driving power chords and with never-ending distortion. "I like this sound's aggressiveness", he said in an interview, "Distortion puts me in a good mood".
There is also the sound itself, the possibility to model it on each of its layers and to draw new meanings from its shimmering. And then there is this long-time closeness to Chris Speed who, with his flexibility and versatility on the tenor saxophone and clarinet, could take on any multi-effect device, and of course the drummer Jim Black, who can rock and swing and play many-voiced melodies, and who always knows which texture or tempo will reinvent their unity or make it explode again. Finally, there is this keenness to play, to experiment, and to sometimes lean a little to the side to get a glimpse of what is going on. All this is possible because Black found the right bunch, a collective of individualists who don't appreciate being pushed in any given direction but can't refrain from exploring all possibilities. As long as the ingredients are wholesome and delicious.
-Stefan Hentz
